The Maruti 800 is a subcompact city car introduced in 1983 in India. Developed by Maruti Udyog (later Maruti Suzuki) and derived from the Suzuki Alto platform, it was designed as an affordable entry-level vehicle for mass motorization.
Built on a transverse-engine unibody layout, it featured small-displacement gasoline engines and a simplified design tailored to local conditions. Produced for nearly three decades, the Maruti 800 played a central role in the expansion of India’s passenger car market.
