Mazda 616 / Also known as :
This group gathers midsize models derived from the Mazda Capella/626 platform. Known under various names depending on markets and generations (including Mazda 616, 626, Capella, Cronos, and the sportier MX-6), they offered a wide range of body styles from sedans and wagons to coupes. The Ford Telstar, sold mainly in Asia-Pacific, was a rebadged version built under the Mazda/Ford partnership. Together, these models represented Mazda’s global midsize car lineup, combining reliability, comfort, and in some cases sporty driving dynamics.
The Mazda 616 was introduced in the early 1970s as part of the Capella family, positioned as a midsize sedan with a focus on practicality and affordability. Offered in sedan and coupé body styles, it featured a four-cylinder engine that emphasized efficiency over performance. The 616 shared much of its design and chassis with the rotary-powered RX-2 but catered to customers seeking a more economical, conventional engine. It helped Mazda expand its global presence by offering a reliable family car with modern styling for its time.
