The Porsche 924 is a front-engine sports coupe produced from 1976 to 1988. Originally developed as a joint project with Volkswagen, it became an important milestone for Porsche by introducing a more affordable model that expanded the brand’s customer base.
Featuring a transaxle layout (front-mounted engine with rear-mounted transmission), the 924 achieved near-ideal weight distribution and balanced handling characteristics. Its clean, aerodynamic design (penned by Harm Lagaay) includes distinctive pop-up headlights, a hallmark of sports cars from that era.
The lineup included multiple variants such as the 924 Turbo and the 924 S, the latter equipped with a Porsche-derived engine related to the 944. Known more for agility and driving balance than outright power, the Porsche 924 played a key role in reshaping Porsche’s image in the late 1970s and 1980s. Today, it remains a popular entry point into classic Porsche ownership.
